History of the Ellison Inn previously known as the Hillside Inn
The past and the future
Originally built between the late 1960s & early 70's, this iconic building that was previously known as the Hillside Inn has undergone
a thoughtful and meticulous renovation that honors its rich history while carefully incorporating updates that were needed.
Throughout the process, great care was taken to preserve the character and charm that make this property a true piece of old Door County. From the warm wood tones to the familiar, welcoming feel, the spirit of the original space remains at the heart of the experience.
Three guest rooms have been left original from when we purchased the building in 2021 (not as shown in photo the rooms were remodeled in the 90's), with only minor updates made to meet modern safety and sanitation standards and are still bookable today. All rooms updated or original offer guests the opportunity to feel like they are stepping back in time to what Door County once was, simple, nostalgic, and deeply authentic.
This balance of preservation and renewal allows the property to evolve while still holding onto what made it special in the first place, ensuring that the essence of old Door County continues to live on here.

A truly one-of-a-kind space, the lounge immediately transports you the moment you step inside. Vaulted wood ceilings, rich wood-paneled walls, and a striking double-sided stone fireplace create an atmosphere that feels both grand and deeply inviting.

Preserving this mid-century gem has been incredibly important to us since purchasing it. We’ve poured our time, energy, and heart into ensuring that what makes this place special continues to shine through, and we work hard every single day to uphold that standard for our guests.

Onsite Amenities
For your convenience, we offer a selection of simple, thoughtful amenities to make your stay more comfortable. Most of these amenities are accessible 24/7 within the main lobby or nook. Guests are welcome to enjoy complimentary coffee between the times of 6am-11am in our main lobby. We also offer a filtered water dispenser for easy access to fresh drinking water and hot water in our nook. There is also a microwave and vending machine available in the lobby for light meal prep or quick snacks.

Getting here
Getting here is easy—just stay on Highway 42 all the way through Sturgeon Bay and continue north. As you come into Ellison Bay and start heading down the hill near the welcome sign, you’ll find us on the right-hand side.

Smoking
Our hotel is a 100% non-smoking. It is important to us to provide a healthy environment to our guests. Per the anti-smoking law, smoking is prohibited within a 9-meter radius of every door and window of the establishment. Failing to cooperate will result in a severe fine. In addition, possession and consumption of cannabis is prohibited on the entire site and in the state of Wisconsin. Thank you for your cooperation.

To cancel a reservation, guests must reply directly to their original confirmation email or text message, no exceptions.

All cancellation timeframes are based on the 3:00 PM CST check-in time on the arrival date. Only cancellations submitted via email or text will be accepted and eligible for refund consideration.
